Yes, all meals are included in the retreat cost. Our resident chef is passionate about sourcing fresh, seasonal ingredients and creating meals that highlight the vibrant flavors of the area. Expect indulgent dishes crafted from local produce, with bright, desert-inspired flavors that reflect the unique character of our surroundings.
We are dedicated to making every meal a delightful experience, with options that cater to various dietary restrictions and allergies. Please inform us of your needs ahead of time, and we’ll ensure that your meals are both delicious and suitable for you.
What level of experience is required for the workshops?
No prior experience is required! Our workshops are designed to accommodate all skill levels, from complete beginners to seasoned artists. We start with foundational techniques and build up to more advanced practices, ensuring that everyone can participate and grow. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to explore new methods, you’ll find support and inspiration throughout each session. Our goal is to help you tap into your creativity and leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.
How many guests will be attending the Joshua Tree Retreat?
This retreat is especially intimate, limited to just 12 guests. This small group size ensures a cozy and personalized experience where we can truly connect and get to know each other well. With such a close-knit group, you'll have the opportunity to form meaningful relationships, share your creative journey, and receive individualized attention during our workshops. This intimate setting fosters a supportive and nurturing environment, making the retreat even more special and transformative.
What should I bring to the retreat? What kind of materials and supplies will be provided for the workshops?
You don't need to worry about bringing any art supplies, as we provide everything you will need for our workshops. Imagine a feast for the senses with a variety of raw pigments and inks to experiment with, textural paper, raw canvas, an assortment of beautiful brushes, and palette knives. We thoughtfully design curated tablescapes brimming with beautiful supplies for you to explore and experiment with, ensuring that you can fully immerse yourself in the creative process.
We’ll provide a full recommended packing list after booking. Additionally, we will suggest a couple of optional art supplies you might want to bring, such as a marble mortar and pestle or a plein air easel, which you may find useful to have in your studio after the retreat. These are optional, so feel free to bring them if you already have them or are interested in incorporating them into your practice. Just bring your creative spirit, comfortable clothing for working both indoors and outdoors, and an eagerness to learn and be inspired!
Where should I stay while at the Retreat?
Your daily activities will revolve around our retreat venue, but there are SO many beautiful places to rest at night nearby! We recommend booking a stay at one of the charming AirBnBs or hotels in Joshua Tree, Sunfair, Panorama Heights, or Hidden River. We’ve personally stayed at these two places and loved our experience - Joshua Tree House and Villa Paloma. Additionally, we’ll coordinate a community space through our retreat app, where you can connect with other attendees to share accommodations and car rentals if you’d like. This way, you can meet fellow retreat-goers and make the most of your time together both during and outside the retreat.
How do I get to the retreat location? Should I arrive early to explore on my own?
Most guests will fly into Palm Springs International Airport, from where you’ll rent a car and take a scenic drive through the desert, heading east on CA-62 E toward Joshua Tree. This route offers a stunning introduction to the California desert. We recommend arriving a day early to settle in and explore the area at your own pace, however, if you arrive early on the14th, you would be able to join us for our first evening together!
We’ve also put together a field guide with recommendations for exploring, shopping, and enjoying Joshua Tree. Arriving early allows you to unwind, take in the local sights, and ease into the retreat experience.
What is the weather like during the retreat dates, and how should I prepare for it?
In September, the desert can still be quite hot, with daytime temperatures often remaining high. However, most of our activities will take place in the shaded areas of our retreat venue. We’ll also explore Joshua Tree National Park during the cooler hours of golden hour, which is the perfect time to enjoy the stunning landscapes. To prepare, we recommend packing lightweight, breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and plenty of sunscreen. Evenings can be cooler, so bring layers for comfort. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout your stay.
I’m feeling a bit intimidated and nervous about traveling and attending the retreat on my own. Can you offer any reassurance?
Feeling nervous about traveling alone is completely natural, but we want you to know that you're in good hands. We've traveled solo across the globe and experienced firsthand the incredible sense of empowerment and growth that comes from stepping out of our comfort zones.
As soon as you arrive, you'll be welcomed into a warm and supportive community. Our team is dedicated to making sure you feel comfortable and well-cared for from the moment you arrive. You'll have the chance to connect with fellow participants from across the nation and beyond, forming deep and meaningful bonds through shared experiences and creative exploration.
Rest assured, by the time the retreat begins, you'll feel right at home, embraced by the magic of the desert and the company of kindred spirits. We can’t wait to share this transformative journey with you!
Can I take photographs or videos at the retreat?
Capturing the things that inspire us is such an important part of the process for us so we will provide time and space for you to take beautiful photos and videos throughout the events each day, however, professional photography and/or videography is prohibited.
We will have a photographer and videographer on site each day to beautifully capture the whole retreat and will share many of those photos with you as well!
