Did you know inspiration is a skill you can develop? In this workshop (or really, the ongoing theme and practice of this retreat) we’ll discuss the practical steps you can take to nourish that deeply magical and renewable part of yourself. Its rewards will return to you daily, year after year.
These practices have completely changed our lives, and we can’t wait to share them with you!
-
The natural world is rich with beauty, and one of the most gratifying ways we experience and celebrate that beauty is by taking photos and videos that share our unique points of view.
To capture a scene in a photograph is, in a way, paying respect to the beauty you are witnessing. It is an honor.
In this workshop, we will guide you through intuitive photography and video techniques, how to develop your unique point of view, and how we approach creating and capturing a meaningful image.
-
Our natural ink, plant dyeing, and foraging workshops offer a unique opportunity to connect intimately with the stunning desert landscape of Joshua Tree. You'll embark on a journey through the diverse local flora, discovering the art of sustainable art-making using nature's bounty. Learn to identify and gather native plants such as creosote bush, yucca, and prickly pear cactus. Explore the vibrant pigments found in the blooms of desert marigolds and the rich, earthy tones extracted from mesquite pods and ironwood bark. You'll uncover the beauty and versatility of natural dyes and inks, creating art that is deeply rooted in the essence of the desert.
-
Embark on a journey of natural beauty and creativity as Tanya guides you through a captivating demonstration. With her expert instruction, you'll discover the art of crafting your own silk scarf using flowers and plants as your palette.
Explore the historical significance of botanical dyes, diving into an ancient yet modern practice. With a gentle touch, vibrant flowers and plants reveal the promise of transforming silk into a canvas of natural hues.
Instructions become a dance of technique and imagination. Witness the meditative process of arranging botanicals on silk, infusing each placement with artistic intention and a deeper connection to nature.
Steaming and heat work their magic, unveiling colors collaboratively born from you, the plants, and the essence of creation.
As the demonstration concludes, hold in your hands not just a scarf, but a testament to partnership with the Earth. This guidance fosters newfound appreciation for the beauty nature and human artistry can conjure.
-
Finding pigment in the landscape and transforming it into paint is one of the most gratifying practices. We’ll then transform this pigment into oil paint, watercolor, acrylic, and dyes can be used on canvas (and then the magic takes over.)
Using natural, non-toxic minerals, we'll create stunning works of art that are both beautiful and sustainable.
There is a lot of mystery in natural pigments — the ways they interact and react, the chemistry in play on your canvas… pure magic.
-
Using natural materials from the desert landscape, Tanya will guide us in creating unique inks to craft original artwork with this magical, deeply inspiring medium.
This workshop will take you through the entire process of making natural inks from start to finish. Tanya will demonstrate how to create inks using simple, accessible techniques, showcasing the vast array of colors that can be achieved from various desert elements.
Once the demonstration is complete, you’ll have the opportunity to experiment with a range of natural hues, using the inks to produce beautiful, one-of-a-kind artwork that reflects the essence of the desert.
-
This workshop will take you through the entire process of creating a painting; starting by foraging for materials in the surrounding wilderness and then moving on to creating our own natural pigments using simple techniques.
With our pigments ready, we'll dive into the creative process and use them to create beautiful, abstract paintings on both paper and canvas that capture the essence of the landscape, the emotion and energy you are tapping into, and the beauty in the world around you.
Whether you're an experienced artist or a complete beginner, this workshop is designed to inspire and challenge you and help you develop your own unique artistic voice.
-
Imagine it -- painting in the magnificent Joshua Tree landscape, ancient rocks surrounding you, the vibrant sky above, and wildflowers within reach. You work alongside the elements, the light, the natural paint we created together and all of it comes to life in your artwork.
-
The majestic rocks and mountains are a sight to see — to feel, really. The time we spend together wandering through these ancient pathways and climbing (gently) over the landscape will leave your heart full and maybe just a little breathless (because of beauty, not struggle).

Most guests will fly into Palm Springs International Airport, from where you’ll rent a car and take a scenic drive through the desert, heading east on CA-62 E toward Joshua Tree. This route offers a stunning introduction to the California desert, setting the stage for your retreat experience.
We recommend arriving 1-2 days early to settle in and explore the area at your own pace. Our curated desert-inspired playlist is perfect for setting the mood on your drive. We’ve also put together a field guide with recommendations for exploring, shopping, and enjoying Joshua Tree. Arriving early allows you to unwind, take in the local sights, and ease into the retreat experience.

Your daily activities will revolve around our retreat venue, but you'll need to find your own lodging and transportation. We recommend booking a stay at one of the charming AirBnBs or hotels in Joshua Tree, Sunfair, Panorama Heights, or Hidden River. We’ve personally stayed at these two places and loved our experience - Joshua Tree House and Villa Paloma.
After booking, we’ll provide you with the exact location of the retreat house so you can plan your accommodation accordingly. Additionally, we’ll coordinate a community space through our retreat app, where you can connect with other attendees to share accommodations and car rentals if you’d like. This way, you can meet fellow retreat-goers and make the most of your time together both during and outside the retreat.
-
No prior experience is required! Our workshops are designed to accommodate all skill levels, from complete beginners to seasoned artists. We start with foundational techniques and build up to more advanced practices, ensuring that everyone can participate and grow. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to explore new methods, you’ll find support and inspiration throughout each session. Our goal is to help you tap into your creativity and leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.

In September, the desert can still be quite hot, with daytime temperatures often remaining high. However, most of our activities will take place in the shaded areas of our retreat venue, providing relief from the heat. We’ll also explore Joshua Tree National Park during the cooler hours of golden hour, which is the perfect time to enjoy the stunning landscapes.
To prepare, we recommend packing lightweight, breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and plenty of sunscreen. Evenings can be cooler, so bring layers for comfort. Don’t forget a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout your stay.
We will send a detailed packing list to ensure you’re well-prepared, including suggestions for what to bring and consider for a comfortable and enjoyable retreat experience.tion

Nourish your mind & body
Ok, yes, we’re here to create, but can we talk about the good-good food?
We LOVE good food (like, a lot) and we LOVE lingering over a full table talking and sharing — especially at a retreat where you arrive at each meal glowing with inspiration and the marks of art-making still on your hands.
And because we are rather obsessed with the landscape around us, even the food and drinks we enjoy will be rooted in nature. Picture tantalizing beverages infused with fragrant sage, and chef-crafted indulgent dishes passed around candlelight, using the freshest seasonal local ingredients.
where the flavors of the desert will come alive in every bite
Gathered around our long communal table nestled in the heart of the desert, we will let the magic of the landscape inspire conversations that linger into the night.
We can’t wait to nourish your soul and awaken your senses in the most indulgent way possible.
